FORMATION AND SUPERVISION AT THE MARGINS

Volume 44, 2024

The Divine has a history of working at the margins. The people of Israel sojourn in wilderness places for forty years of formation prior to entering the promised land. At the annunciation, Mary’s formation is profoundly expressed in the Magnificat. Soon after Jesus is born, he and his family experience the formation of being vulnerable political refugees. Later it is said of Jesus, “Can anything good come from Nazareth?” Similarly, Muhammad (p.b.u.h.) retreated to the Cave of Hira near Mecca and there received a revelation that would form a people. Siddhartha Gautama, while meditating under a fig tree, attained enlightenment, and the Buddha set in motion the Buddhist faith. Things happen at the margins.

Gaining new perspective through reflective engagement in marginal places happens regularly for our students. Supervisors gain insight when exploring contexts and students’ experiences from a new angle of vision. Perhaps this season of pandemics has made us more aware of marginal spaces.

Volume 44 provides space for reflecting on your experience as a CPE educator, theological field educator, practical theologian, or spiritual director. In what experience at the margin, or contextual margin, or marginal practice, or . . . have you observed formation taking place? What is your takeaway? Is there relevance for the rest of your work? Thank you for exploring around the edges and sharing your observations and learning. We welcome poems and visual art expressions as well as essays.

If you have an essay, poem, or visual art piece that may not exactly address the theme, please share your idea with an editor. There’s room at the margins!
